Melbourne Magic for Mimzical 15 March2004
Marvelous Mimzical (2002 Classic $12,000) gave the Melbourne fillies a galloping lesson when she ventured south to Flemington on Saturday for her first start in the southern capital.
She christened the new Portelli Melbourne base in the best way possible when she romped home by more than three lengths under the steadier of 58.5 kg.
Inglis bloodstock consultant Richard Haynes was the only part owner on hand to cheer the little girl home, but he was enthusiastic enough for the rest of us!
Mimizical is a Super VOBIS qualified filly, so she picked up an owners bonus of $23,000 to go with her winners cheque of $39,000.
Her overall prizemoney now stand in excess of $160,000, a fabulous return on her initial modest purchase price of just $12,000.
If I could find a Mimzical at every yearling sale, I’d die a rich man!
Mimzical will hit the homeward trail this week, back to Warwick Farm to prepare for a tilt at some Black Type over the big Easter Carnival at Royal Randwick.
Our girl has an affinity with the somewhat tricky Randwick track and after scoring three times there during her last preparation, we feel Randwick offers her the best chance to secure some valuable Black Type for her future career as a broodmare.
Here’s hoping Damien Oliver comes along for the ride!

Grand Model Pays Her Way 5 March 2004
American mare Grand Model (purchased at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale for $US40,000) has raced her way into the black after winning again at Turfway Park last month.
The four year old daughter of Grand Slam has started four times for her new owners, winning twice and placing twice to successfully recoup her purchase price of $US40,000. She is expected to line up again next week and may even progress to a stakes event if things continue to go her way.
Grand Model has considerable upside to her pedigree being a half-sister to stakes-winners Uanme and Be My Reply, from the family of renowned broodmare Fanfreluche whose descendants include Encosta de Lago and Flying Spur.
Inglis Premier Purchases 16 February 2004
The 2004 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale set new records for average (up 19%) and gross (up 30%) generating turnover of $18.2 million, a figure that would have been unthinkable for a Melbourne sale just a few short years ago. Encosta de Lago can be credited for a good chunk of the sale’s success but it takes more than a sandwich to make a picnic and at this picnic there was something for everyone. At the Premier Yearling sale, Group and Listed Delegates, Stephen Allanson, racing Victoria, Vin Cox, Richard Turnley, Chairman G & L Committee and Leigh Jordan, former secretary G & L Committee and racing Victoria
