Soft Win for Valse Des Fleurs 26 July 2004
Promising John Hawkes trained filly VALSE DES FLEURS (2003 Magic Million $75,000) made a pleasing return to racing at Newcastle on Saturday, scoring a stylish win over 1200 metres.
The Stravinsky (USA) filly was stakes-placed last preparation behind classy colt Not a Single Doubt, before chasing home the likes of Alinghi and Alizes in some of the better fillies events.
Perfectly placed under the set weight conditions of Saturday’s maiden event, Valse des Fleurs produced a lovely turn of foot that will no doubt see her win in much better company.
Valse des Fleurs is a New Zealand bred filly, which we purchased for $75,000 at the Magic Millions Sales on behalf of enthusiastic owners Paul and Judy Kevin.
She was a lovely mover as a yearling, but we always thought she might need a bit of time to mature and show her best. To come out running early like she did and gain Black Type in her first campaign was a surprise bonus.
Valse des Fleurs is likely to come to town for a three year old fillies event on August 14 and from there, may tackle the higher grades if she continues to improve.
Promising Return for Haleconia 26 July 2004
Superbly bred filly HALECONIA (2003 Easter $280,000) stepped out at Hawkesbury on Sunday, having her first start since an unplaced run in the AJC Gimcrack Stales L last October.
Prepared by Garry Frazer, Haleconia showed abundant pace before being run down close to home and finishing in third place, beaten a length and a half.
The Danehill (USA) filly from Group One winner Cannsea, will derive great benefit from the run and is sure to be winning her share of races.
Congratulations All Round! 14 July 2004
Congratulations to all members of the Banjo Club Syndicate, which races the promising two year old JYMCAREW (2003 Classic $50,000) who broke through for his first metropolitan win at Warwick Farm on Tuesday (13th June).
One Banjo Club member, Reg Inglis had more than just a win to celebrate having been married at the weekend to partner Nancy Petch. Special congratulations and best wishes to both!
The success of Jymcarew has been particularly satisfying for me, having been commissioned by Reg to purchase a horse for the Banjo Club at my first Inglis sale operating as an independent agent after leaving the firm at the end of 2002.
Jymcarew was a lovely athletic yearling by a great sire in Danzero and at $50,000 I thought he was tremendous value. To date he has been to the races seven times for two wins and two minor placings, earning prizemoney of $25,750.
His trainer Bob Thomsen is extremely happy with the horse and he will now go for a short break with the aim to be back racing by Christmas.
Showing Promise at the Trials 14 July 2004
Jymcarew was actually one of two yearlings by Danzero, which we purchased from the 2003 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. The other colt GRAND ZERO, a $70,000 purchase from the Marauding (NZ) mare Doyen, is beginning to show real promise under the care of Gary Portelli.
Now a gelding, he went to the trials twice during May, showing significant improvement at his second appearance to record a stylish win in slick time for the 800 metre scamper.
Another of our two year olds FASNATIC (2003 Premier $65,000) had his first trial on the 18th of June.
His trainer Gary Portelli was greatly pleased by his competitive performance to finish a close second, splitting the talented Waterhouse trained runner Dress Suit and the metropolitan winner Subreilly.
Both GRAND ZERO and FASNATIC have gone for a short break, but it will not be long before they are ready to get serious about the business of winning races!
News from the Breaker 14 July 2004
New season two year olds are beginning to appear on the training tracks all around Australia and already some of our purchases from earlier this year have made the right impression.
You would expect to hear positive reports on a beautiful chestnut filly by Rory’s Jester and that is certainly the case, with Gary Portelli declaring the filly from Caledonia Rose a “real machine.”
She is the first foal of a young mare by Woodman (USA) and boasts a prolific Black Type family packed with quality stakes-winning fillies such as Group One winner Lady of the Pines.
Purchased for just $42,500 from the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale in Melbourne she appealed as an ideal investment opportunity with great potential for strong residual value as a broodmare prospect.
Magic Millions National Sale Purchases 27 June 2004
The 2004 Magic Millions National Sale moved up another notch this year and is clearly the fastest growing sale in Australia. The overall gross of $28.6 million nearly doubled that of the previous year, boosted by the various stud dispersals, which added greatly to the depth of quality on offer. More on the Sales page.
