Keeneland market surges ahead 10 November 2004

The strong market at the 2004 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale continued throughout the second session with a further 18 mares fetching $US1million or more bringing the overall gross after two days to $US162,463,500.

Vin Cox Bloodstock featured on the results list capturing Lot 612, Nevermore, with a winning bid of $US950,000.

The four year old is a Group One placed, three-time winner by champion sire Unbridled from the stakes-winning Vice Regent mare Teewinot.

“Nevermore was bought for a private Australian client and is an absolute stunner,” said Vin Cox, Keeneland's Australasian representative.

“She gained a Group One placing behind champion mares Storm Flag Flying and Azeri after the catalogue went to print and the short term plan is to continue racing her in the US before eventually bringing her back to Australia for a stud career.”

Top price today at $US4.8 million was paid for the Unbridled mare Santa Catarina, a Group Two winner with several Group One placings to her name. The four year old was presented with a positive test to champion sire A.P. Indy in her first season at stud.

“The market over here for proven horses is phenomenal,” said Cox. “Any mares with performance at Group level are making huge money, so many vendors are achieving results above expectation.”

The strength of the market is undoubtedly being driven by the escalating value of sire prospects and the vast money to be made from their earnings at stud.

“A horse like Smarty Jones was syndicated for $US35 million, so you can see why the big investors can see value in paying a couple of million for the right type of mare,” explained Cox.
