Golden Slipper Triumph for Reavill Farm 22 March 2005
We were delighted by the win of Stratum in the STC Pago Pago Stakes Gr 2 last week, but for long time clients Reavill Farm to claim the Golden Slipper as well with the star colt they bred is nothing short of fantastic.
Congratulations to John and Sheenah Rippon and their entire team at Reavill Farm, sensational result with an outstanding young horse.
Stratum’s dam Bourgeois has turned out to be a terrific purchase for Reavill Farm, secured on our advice for just $55,000 at the 2002 Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale. She was in foal to Redoute’s Choice at the time, resulting in Stratum, which was sold by Reavill for $320,000 at the 2004 Magic Million.
Bourgeois has an old style Australian speed pedigree being by Luskin Star from the stakes-winning Vain mare Brave New World, the ideal type of mare to match with any of the many exciting young Danehill (USA) line sires now crowding the stallion ranks.
Mares such as Bourgeois are not that easy to find these days, particularly when they are in foal to popular second season horses such as Redoute’s Choice was at the time of her sale.
Next Stop Easter 22 March 2005
The 2005 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale begins next Tuesday (March 29) and from now until the last horse is sold on Thursday afternoon, all eyes will be on Australia’s number one thoroughbred sale.
There is tremendous depth to the catalogue and without the domination of Danehill (USA) that we have seen in recent times, this will be a wide-open sale packed with great prospects at all levels of the market.
I will be spending much of my time at the “Newmarket” complex in the lead up to the sale and can be contacted at all times on my mobile 0418 471 061.
The 2005 Inglis Australian Select Broodmare Sale, featuring the star-studded Vinery Dispersal, follows immediately after the yearlings commencing on Sunday week April 3rd.
Again, a sensational book of mares providing a unique opportunity to upgrade and add scope to your bloodstock portfolio.
I’m always available to offer advice or inspect mares for clients so don’t hesitate to give me a call.
Maid for Winning14 March 2005
Superbly related filly MAID FOR ME (2004 Inglis Easter $125,000) opened her winning account at Randwick last Thursday afternoon, resuming successfully from a short break after finishing third to boom filly Mnemosyne last November.
The Gary Portelli trained filly had the benefit of two recent trials, so was well primed for this easier assignment and all going well she will tackle stakes company next start in the AJC Fernhill Handicap.
Maid for Me is by Belong to Me (USA), a sire we’ve had a bit of luck with having raced the very smart sprinter Before Too Long, a Group Two winner of nearly $280,000. This filly is similar in physical type to Before Too Long, although chestnut in colour.
Maid for Me was purchased for some new clients from the draft of John Baxter’s Ruane Stud at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale last year. We were under-bidder on a number of yearlings which have subsequently come out and won, so I am delighted that Maid for Me has done the right thing.
Maid for Me boasts an outstanding pedigree with loads of residual value as she is a half-sister to the dams of Golden Slipper winner Polar Success and Barbara Joseph’s top class mare Ain’t Seen Nothin’. Throw Caulfield Cup winner Elvstroem into the second dam and you are looking at a very serious Black Type producing family.
Stratum Stars for Reavill Farm 14 March 2005
An important stakes success for promising colt Stratum in the STC Pago Pago Stakes Gr 2 is another fine result for John Rippon’s Reavill Farm.
His dam Bourgeois was purchased by myself on behalf of John Rippon at the 2002 Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale for $55,000, in foal to Redoute’s Choice, the result being Stratum.
Stratum was subsequently offered by Reavill Farm at the 2004 Magic Millions Yearling Sale, where he fetched $320,000 to the bid of popular Newcastle trainer Paul Perry.
Bourgeois missed in 2003, but is now in foal to Perry’s former champion sprinter Choisir.
Given the dramatic rise of Redoute’s Choice over the last few months, I think the days of purchasing mares in foal to him for $55,000 are well and truly gone.
Group One Success for Jymcarew 28 February 2005
Vin Cox Bloodstock was celebrating the success of purchasing our very first Group One winner after exciting three year old JYMCAREW (2003 Inglis Classic $50,000) stormed to victory in the STC Canterbury Guineas Gr 1 on Saturday night.
Selecting and buying yearlings is a challenging assignment and the thrill of picking a Group One winner is absolutely fantastic, particularly given the story behind the purchase of Jymcarew.
Commissioned by my old boss Reg Inglis to find a "nice horse" for the Banjo Club, I short-listed three horses for consideration. The first was found to have x-ray issues and the second made too much money, so that left Jymcarew who went slightly over budget but no-one is complaining now!
He is the first Group One winner purchased by Vin Cox Bloodstock and I can only hope there will be many more to follow.
Jymcarew has won five races in all and $414,975 for the Banjo Club Syndicate and his trainer Bob Thomsen intends to follow a traditional path to the AJC Australian Derby Gr 1 by running in the STC Rosehill Guineas Gr 1 in a fortnight.
Congratulations to the Banjo Club Syndicate and I can only wish them further success with this outstanding young horse.
Jymcarew has pulled up very well from the win, however Glen Boss is committed to riding Fastnet Rock and Makybe Diva at Flemington on Rosehill Guineas day, and has stressed that the replacement hoop is keeping the seat warm as Boss has demanded the ride for the Derby.

Exciting three year old Jymcarew
2005 Inglis Premier Purchases 18 February 2005
The 2005 Premier Yearling Sale exceeded all expectations, with record gross ($22.2 million), average ($59,011) and a terrific clearance rate of 85%.
Congratulations, Jymcarew! 14 February 2005
We were absolutely delighted to see JYMCAREW (2003 Classic $50,000) take out the Gosford Guineas L for the Banjo Club Syndicate.
He was one of only four horses purchased by Vin Cox Bloodstock at the 2003 Classic Yearling Sale, a fact which holds great significance for me as it was my first Inglis sale acting as an independent bloodstock agent.
Commissioned by my old boss Reg Inglis to find a “nice horse” for the Banjo Club, Jymcarew fit the bill and for $50,000 I thought he was terrific value.
By a good solid sire in Danzero from the young Grosvenor mare Aperto (NZ), he was a lovely athletic yearling with the scope of pedigree to suggest a future that might extend far beyond his two year old days.
Jymcarew’s rise though the grades under the astute placement of Randwick trainer Bob Thomsen has been keenly watched on my part and his successes celebrated at every turn.
With four wins under his belt and nearly $150,000 in the bank I would say he has developed into a very “nice horse” indeed!
Again, congratulations to all members of the Banjo Club Syndicate and three cheers for Jymcarew!
2005 Inglis Classic Purchases 20 January 2005
Management at William Inglis were no doubt well pleased with this sale, given that it generated a record gross of $14,438,954 and achieved an average price of $34,792, on a par with that recorded at last year’s highly successful Classic Sale.
2005 Magic Millions Purchases 18 January 2005
The 2005 Magic Millions Yearling Sale was able to consolidate on the impressive gains achieved last year by posting a new record average ($117,262) and gross ($65,432,000), without the hype generated by a million dollar yearling. Sales
Umagum and Letter of Intent Show Up at Trials 18 January 2005
We were delighted by the performance of promising Portelli trained two year olds UMAGUM (2004 Premier $87,500) and LETTER OF INTENT (2004 Classic $50,000), who both trialled in impressive fashion at Warwick Farm on Tuesday January 11th.
Umagum was slow to begin, but quickly mustered speed to score a comfortable three quarter length win over the highly rated Flying Pegasus, a metropolitan winner at his only start last preparation. His jockey, Justin Sheehan declared Umagum gave him “a very good feel” and given that he is eligible for Super VOBIS bonuses the plan is to send Umagum down to the Portelli stable in Melbourne where he will aim towards the $1million Inglis Premier Race (February 5th).
Stylish colt Letter of Intent was having his first trial since suffering a bout of shinsoreness back in the spring. He raced very keenly running second in the fastest two year old trial of the morning and his owners are very happy with his progress.
New Year Begins With Magic Millions 4 January 2005
The 2005 sales schedule begins in earnest this week with the mammoth 2005 Magic Millions Yearling Sale at the Gold Coast. A record number of yearlings have been catalogued and competition on the premium horses will be fierce, although in saying that I am sure there is value to be found for those who are prepared to look for it.
Apparently the Magic Millions management has at last taken steps to air condition the auditorium this year, a move that is guaranteed to win widespread approval. The novelty of standing in a tin shed all day under the blazing Queensland sun was wearing a tad thin with buyers (particularly those from overseas), who expect some basic standards of comfort to be met.
Chaud Roche Aims for Inglis Classic 4 January 2005
We were delighted with the performance of promising filly Chaud Roche (2004 Classic $28,000), who turned in a terrific debut run at Warwick Farm on Monday when beaten narrowly into third place.
Forced to cover ground in the run, Chaud Roche still found the lead in the straight before being run down by a couple of swoopers in the last few strides.
Our trainer Gary Portelli now has two weeks to bring the filly to a peak for the $300,000 Inglis Classic at Warwick Farm on January 15th, a race we would dearly love to win.
Portelli is no stranger to the winner's stall for Inglis incentive
races
having won the 2001 $1million Inglis Heroic Championship with Perfect
Crime, a horse that we purchased from the Premier Yearling Sale in Melbourne
for $28,000 ... the exact same price we paid for Chaud Roche, hope the
coincidence doesn't end there.
Jymcarew Continues Good Form 4 January 2005
Talented gelding Jymcarew (2003 Classic $50,000) has been in fine form over the Christmas period, placing twice and winning an open company three year old event at Royal Randwick in three runs since resuming from a spell.
The Bob Thomsen trained son of Danzero has now won over $80,000 in prizemoney for the Banjo Club Syndicate and undoubtedly his best performances are still to come.
His success has been particularly pleasing for me, having been
commissioned by my old boss Reg Inglis to purchase a horse specifically
for the Banjo Club at the 2003 Classic Yearling Sale.
Jymcarew is the horse I chose and when he goes to the races, there is nobody cheering more enthusiastically than me!
