Black Opal Success for Down The Wicket
20 March 2006
Our promising two-year old Down The Wicket scored an exciting win in
the Black Opal Stakes Gr 3 at Canberra on Sunday, covering the 1200 metre
journey in 1:09:94 to record the second fastest ever running of this popular
event.
Prepared by Gary Portelli for a syndicate of five different owners, Down The Wicket has won $155,130 in prizemoney and will now take his place in the $3 million Group One STC Golden Slipper Stakes at Rosehill on April 8.
Down The Wicket was one of six horses purchased by Vin Cox Bloodstock at the 2005 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, secured for just $38,000 from the draft of Woodlands Stud as agent.
From the second crop of Group One Doncaster Handicap winner Over, Down The Wicket is the fourth foal of a former very good racemare in Golf Circuit, a Group Three placed winner of 15 races and close to $200,000 in prizemoney.
Down the Wicket was a lovely individual as a yearling and carries a double cross of the great speed influence Biscay, so it is no surprise to see him up and running so well as a two-year old.
