Magic Millions National Sale Purchases 27 June 2004
The 2004 Magic Millions National Sale moved up another notch this year and is clearly the fastest growing sale in Australia. The overall gross of $28.6 million nearly doubled that of the previous year, boosted by the various stud dispersals, which added greatly to the depth of quality on offer.
The opening session of yearlings proved patchy as you would expect of a yearling sale at this time of year, but the market for weanlings and quality broodmares was as strong as we have seen.
While Magic Millions may not be making a great deal of money from the sale this year (thanks to their innovative decision to waive commission on lots which make over $100,000), they have undoubtedly found a surefire way to capture a large slice of the top end of the market.

Inglis HTBA Scone Yearling Sale 27 May 2004
The 2004 Scone Yearling Sale achieved solid results all round, with
the average price climbing to a respectable $15,230. It is traditionally
a “type” sale and the fancied horses were making excellent
money given their largely modest pedigrees. My three purchases were all
racy athletic colts and if the trio can measure up to expectation will
be heading to Asia to further their racing careers.

Inglis Select Weanling Purchases 19 May 2004
The market for quality commercial weanlings was exceptionally strong at this sale (clearance of 83%) and buyers were quick to pounce on the nice types with some pedigree. Pinhooking can be a tricky business but there have been some notable successes achieved with youngsters purchased from this sale. Thorn Park is the obvious example, a $60,000 weanling resold for $200,000 at Easter.

| $62,000 | Bay colt Brahms (USA) x Croatian Storm | Terrific colt from the first crop of Brahms (USA), a good-looking Group One winner by Danzig, who is certainly worth a punt. Half-brother to three winners from a daughter of Group One winner Electrique. Purchased for a private client. |
| $12,000 | Chestnut filly Belong to Me (USA) x Nancy’s Gold Dream (USA) | Lovely filly and outstanding value at this price, being the second foal of a six time winning American mare by Valid Appeal. Purchased for a private client. |
Inglis Australian Select Broodmare Sale Purchases 27 April 2004
Following hot on the heels of a record breaking Easter, the better class mares at the Inglis Select Broodmare Sale were always going to be the subject of keen competition. Despite the overall lack of quality, anything remotely above average sold through the roof and I can’t help but wonder if there is better value to be found by purchasing privately at this point in time rather than through the ring.
The re-instatement of a pass in commission at this sale had the desired effect and the clearance rate soared back to 84% after a disappointing number of mares were led away unsold from last year’s sale.
Apart from the filly Career Start (which I specked), the list of purchases below were made for a private client with the intention of trading these pregnancies into the weanling market next year.

Proven producer of two stakes-winners Export Gold and Follow Gold. Covered by English Derby winner Galileo (IRE), whose oldest Australian progeny are weanlings. |

La Bates Blue (USA) |
American bred winning half-sister to three stakes-winners from a family, which has worked with great success in the Southern Hemisphere. Proven producer being the dam of stakes-winner Our Quartet and covered by Chilean champion sire Hussonet (USA) in his first season at stud. |
$27,000 |
Career Start |
Placed three year old half-sister to this season’s stakes-placed juvenile filly Faster Pussycat, from a prolific Black Type family which is improving all the time. Racing and breeding proposition. |

Stakes-placed grand-daughter of legendary racehorse Secretariat and already a successful producer having thrown the American stakes-winner Good Timin Brook. Covered by successful shuttle sire Desert Prince (IRE). |
Inglis Easter Purchases 22 April 2004
The 2004 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale was a resounding success both for the Inglis company and for the Australasian breeding industry in general. The sale represented a real “coming of age” for our industry, with the deeds of horses like Choisir and Silent Witness attracting large numbers of international buyers with a genuine admiration and respect for our product.
Multi million dollar stud deals for stallion prospects such as Choisir, Reset and Exceed and Excel have served to raise the bar on what a buyer is prepared to spend on a yearling colt, hence the booming colts average at Easter of $220,534 with an unprecedented seven youngsters topping the $1million mark.
Colts aside, the market was unbelievably strong across the board, so much so that I had one client with $400,000 to spend who finished empty handed despite my best efforts.
There can be no doubting that the Australian Easter Yearling Sale has joined the ranks of the major leagues and is now widely seen as a global destination for the serious business of purchasing world class young thoroughbreds.

| $220,000 | Bay filly Anabaa (USA) x Vestey | By a proven sire of top class horses both here and overseas. Second foal of Group Three winner Vestey, a member of the prolific Gypsy Moss clan, which churns out Black Type performers at an astonishing rate. Lovely racy type of filly. Purchased for a private client and likely to be trained by Gai Waterhouse. |
| $200,000 | Bay filly Danzero x Posing (NZ) | Big strong scopey filly, typical of the Danzero breed. Half-sister to high class mare Zanna, from stakes-winner Posing, a half-sister to champion Kiwi filly Ad Alta. Outstanding pedigree and type, great buying! Purchased for new clients and to be trained by Gary Portelli. |
| $150,000 | Bay filly Flying Spur x Soudain | Neat racy type. Half-sister to this season’s Group Two placed juvenile Esther, from a sister to Golden Slipper winner Burst. Great residual value from the family of grand producer Valour. Purchased for a Japanese client and will be trained by Phillip Stokes. |
| $125,000 | Chestnut filly Belong to Me (USA) x Polar Maid | Attractive filly with phenomenal residual value being a half-sister to the dams of Polar Success and Ain’t Seen Nothin’. By the sire of our other good mare Before Too Long and is very similar in type, although chestnut in colour. Purchased for the same clients as the Danzero filly and will also be trained by Gary Portelli. |
| $120,000 | Chestnut colt King’s Best (USA) x Chauntress | Half-brother to stakes-winner Minerva. By a young well credentialed first season sire from a Rory’s Jester mare. Strong well grown type purchased for a HK client to race in Hong Kong. |
| $100,000 | Bay filly Flying Spur x Zastov | First foal of outstanding mare Zastov. Although she appears as only stakes-placed in the catalogue, Zastov was good enough to beat Sunline home when third in the 1999 AJC Epsom H Gr 1, so she most definitely had the ability of a Group winning mare. Forward two year old type purchased for Kentucky based client Helen Alexander and is to be trained by Grahame Begg. |
Magic Millions Adelaide Purchases
The team at Magic Millions would have been well pleased by the results achieved in Adelaide, their sale aggregate rising by a whopping 75% and some 23 yearlings fetching $100,000 or better. A clearance rate of just 74% on the opening day of selling was indicative of an uncertain market, however a booming evening session followed on the Wednesday and continued unabated into Thursday, driving the overall clearance to an acceptable 80%.
The catalogue featured some outstanding types and for those with the
right horses it was a very good sale indeed, although there was a feeling
among buyers that there were rather too many youngsters just making up
the numbers and undoubtedly this was reflected in the patchy clearance.

| $20,000 | Chestnut filly by Marauding (NZ) x Regelle | Sister-in-blood to multiple Group One winner King Marauding, being by Marauding from an unraced sister to stakes-winner Wear the Crown, the dam of King Marauding. Not unlike another of our bargain purchases, Mimzical, in that she is a little on the small side, has very good joints and is a hell of a walker. Purchased on spec and will join the Gary Portelli stable. |
Inglis Premier Purchases
The 2004 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale set new records for average (up 19%) and gross (up 30%) generating turnover of $18.2 million, a figure that would have been unthinkable for a Melbourne sale just a few short years ago. Encosta de Lago can be credited for a good chunk of the sale’s success but it takes more than a sandwich to make a picnic and at this picnic there was something for everyone.
On paper the catalogue always looked to be well above average, however to be perfectly honest some of the horses with the better pedigrees simply didn’t have the required conformation to match their breeding. In saying that, there were still a great number of first class individuals and vendors with the right product certainly got top dollar for their efforts.

| $87,500 | Bay colt Umatilla (NZ) x Gummy | By one of the most under-rated and versatile stallions in the country from a half-sister to the dam of current star filly Sharp. Big bold individual who appeals as a sure fire two year old type. Purchased for a private client and will join the Gary Portelli stable. |
| $42,500 | Chestnut filly Rory’s Jester x Caledonia Rose | Rory’s Jester filly with a lot to like in her pedigree being the first foal of a young Woodman (USA) mare who is a half-sister to ill-fated Group One winner Lady of the Pines. Closely related to stakes-winning filly Heaps of Fun and has loads of potential for residual value. Not overly big, but steps lightly with the grace of a cat and will join the Gary Portelli stable.

Magic Millions Purchases
There is no denying that the 2004 Magic Millions Yearling Sale was an overwhelming success with record figures posted right across the board. Of course the large draft of yearlings by Danehill (USA) were always going to make a huge impact on the overall results, however it was the strength of the middle market which really made it such an outstanding sale for buyers and sellers alike.
The catalogue featured a huge number of well grown and well conformed youngsters by popular sires, with buyers such as myself presented with a wealth of talent to choose from. The market for colts was exceptionally strong as we have come to expect at Magic Millions (438 colts / 272 fillies) and they achieved a clearance of 87% and average of $112,637, compared with the fillies clearance of 82% and average $105,553.
The only criticism of this sale is the deplorable conditions under which
it was held. There is no escaping the oppressive heat in that so called
“auditorium”, which amounts to little more than a large tin
shed. If Magic Millions is to be regarded as a world class bloodstock
event, then the time has surely come to upgrade facilities and deliver
some basic comforts to the buyers who make it all happen.

$200,000 |
bay filly Flying Spur x Soda Watch |
Stunning filly with a stunning pedigree page. Half-sister to top class sprinter Camena and stakes-winner Jai’s Jump, with the immediate family all being bred up to the best commercial stallions. The full sister to this filly made $325,000 at Easter in 2002, so at $200,000 this girl looks well priced. Offered early in the sale and by my reckoning she may have made 50% more if offered on the Saturday night. Purchased on behalf of a private client and to be trained by Garry Frazer. |
$80,000 |
chestnut filly High Yield (USA) x Stapleton Lass |
From the first crop of Group One winning son of champion sire Storm Cat. Half-sister to stakes-winner Allzap from Group One winner Stapleton Lass. Purchased on behalf of a private client and to be trained by Garry Frazer. |
$60,000 |
chestnut colt Thunder Gulch (USA) x Tennis |
By an under-rated stallion from an unraced daughter of Palace Music (USA), who comes from a great old NZ family. Outstanding individual and in my humble opinion close to the nicest horse in the sale. Bought on spec and is such a big strong type that he has gone to be broken in straight away before joining the Gary Portelli stable. |
$57,500 |
chestnut colt Perugino (USA) x Drop Anchor |
By another under-rated stallion from slick Melbourne stakes-winning mare Drop Anchor. Eye-catching colt, a real running type. Purchased on behalf of a private client and to be trained by Garry Frazer. |
$250,000 |
bay filly Snippets x Miss Prospect |
Certainly bred to be up and running early, being by Snippets from stakes-winner Miss Prospect, a three-quarter sister-in-blood to Magic Millions winner Catnipped. From a fabulous family that you just love buying into, with the sort of residual value that will last a lifetime. Lovely racy filly purchased on behalf of a private client, trainer to be decided. |
$50,000 |
bay colt Danehill Dancer (IRE) x Myamble |
First foal of a winning half-sister to Group One winning sprinter Ruffles and her equally brilliant sister Ateates. Lots to like about the pedigree and is by the sire of Choisir. Tough looking colt that will be out early, had a few bumps and bruises on him that probably took away some potential buyers, plus he was stabled in probably the worst stable I have ever seen at a major sale. Bought on spec and will join the Gary Portelli stable. |
$80,000 |
bay filly Danzero x Prefer an Angel |
By the sire of Magic Millions winner Dance Hero from Group Two winner Prefer An Angel, whose only foal to race is a good winner. Very nice filly that might need a bit of time. Purchased on behalf of a private client and to be trained by Garry Frazer. |
